Bella Mackie’s fiction debut How to Kill Your Family is a witty, British comedy from the perspective of the killer herself. Despite the shocking title, which is sure to raise eyebrows and attract curious glances from strangers on public transport, we soon immerse ourselves into the mind of twentysomething Grace Bernard who has very valid reasons for her murderous sprees.
Out to avenge her dead mother and furious at her absentee rich businessman father, I found myself intrigued by Grace, grippingly enjoying the elaborate and hilarious buildups to each of her murders. She definitely goes to lengthy extents to achieve her goals.
Although I’m not sure how much How to Kill Your Family will stand the test of time as it is very much a product of the current zeitgeist with many potentially untranslatable ‘Britishisms’, I found Mackie’s outrageously funny murder comedy (CrimeCom, anyone?!) a wonderful premise.
The end made my jaw drop, leaving me thinking about Grace long after having put How to Kill Your Family down.
